Vortex Diamondback HD 8x42 Review

The Vortex Diamondback HD 8x42 is the binocular we recommend more than any other. At around $280 CAD, it offers optical quality that used to cost twice as much just five years ago.

Build quality

Rubber-armoured, fully waterproof, and fog-proof with argon purging. The chassis feels solid without being heavy - 623g is comfortable for all-day use. The twist-up eyecups have firm detents and work well with or without glasses.

Optical performance

The HD glass delivers sharp, colour-accurate images across about 85% of the field of view. Edge softness is present but minimal - you won't notice it in normal use. Chromatic aberration is well-controlled for this price range.

Low-light performance is genuinely good. Dawn and dusk birding is comfortable, and the coatings handle backlit situations without excessive flare.

Close focus: 1.5m - excellent for watching warblers at close range.

In Canadian conditions

We've used these through an Ontario winter at -25°C and a BC spring in constant rain. No fogging, no mechanical issues, no complaints. The lens coatings shed water well enough that you don't need to constantly wipe them.

What could be better

The lens caps are the only weak point. They're functional but feel cheap compared to the binoculars themselves. A minor complaint on an otherwise excellent product.

Verdict

If you're spending $200–400 on birding binoculars in Canada, the Diamondback HD 8x42 is the clear winner. The unconditional Vortex warranty seals it - if anything ever goes wrong, they replace it, no questions asked.
